The Embassy of Sweden in Athens and the Hellenic-Swedish Chamber of Commerce,  organized the 2nd Waste Management Forum entitled:Sustainable Solid Waste Management Systems . The event took place at Radisson Blu Park Hotel in Athens, on Wednesday May 18, 2016.

 

 

 

As circular economy is moving higher and higher up the agenda, the organic waste sector is orientated towards the management and recovery of resources. The European Commission adopted an ambitious Circular Economy Package, which includes revised legislative proposals on waste to stimulate Europe's transition towards a circular economy which will boost global competitiveness, foster sustainable economic growth and generate new jobs.
Following the successful first Waste Management Forum, the 2nd Waste Management Forum was attended by more than 130 participants.
The Ambassador of Sweden to Greece Mrs. Charlotte Wrangberg and the Chairman of the Hellenic-Swedish Chamber of Commerce welcomed the participants.
Keynote Speakers of the Forum were, the Alternate Minister of Productive Reconstruction of the Ministry of Environment & Energy Mr. Yiannis Tsironis, the General Secretary of Waste Management Coordination of the Ministry of Interior & Administrative Reconstruction Mr. Evangelos Kapetanios and the fmr Senior Advisor of the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions Mr. Gunnar Fredriksson.

The First Session of the Forum was about the New Trends Technologies and Processes in Waste Management.
Ms. Åsa Tärnström, Process Leader, City of Gothenburg addressed about Recycling parks – Cooperation in the city for a sustainable waste management,
Mr. Per-Olof Hallberg, International Relations Manager, Gastrike Atervinnare of the City of Gavle addressed about The Swedish Recycling Revolution,
Mr. Dimitris Tasias, Account Manager, Industry & Society of Ericsson Hellas addressed about the Intelligent Waste Management for cities: a Greek case and
Ms. Sandrine Galparoli, Country Manager, Greece of H&M addressed about Company Responses to Waste Management, the Case of H&M.

The Second Session was about Regional and Local Perspectives
Mr. Nikos Chiotakis, Member of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece, KEDE & Chairman of the Board & C.E.O., P.E.T.A. SA addressed about Municipalities as key players to a decentralized waste management policy: a new era for our cities and for the everyday life of its citizens,
Ms. Afroditi Biza, Vice-President of the Association of Municipalities in the Attica Region – Solid Waste Management (EDSNA)addressed about Attica Prefecture’s Planning on Waste Management,
Mr. Andreas Varelas, Vice Mayor for Waste Management of the City of Athens addressed about City of Athens’ Planning On Waste Management.

The Third Session was about the Greek Waste Landscape Changing: Opportunities and Challenges
Prof. Maria Loizidou,(presentation part 1, part 2) School of Chemical Engineering, Unit of Environmental Science & Technology of the National, Technical University of Athens addressed about Prospects and Limitations in Adopting Zero Waste Strategies in Greece,
Mr. Antonis Mavropoulos, Chair, Scientific and Technical Committee of ISWA of the Institute of Local Government Greece addressed about Economic and Social Considerations in Waste Management in Greece,
Mr. Nikolaos Mamalougas, Head of Managing Authority, O.P. “Transportation Infrastructure, Environment and Sustainable Development” of the Ministry of Economy, Development & Tourism-Environmental Sector addressed about Financing the Investment Required for Waste Management in Greece.
